Maker's Studio
A New Program Series

Maker’s Studio is a new quarterly hands-on program series that invites the public to engage in the art of making. Led by accomplished regional artists and designers, Maker’s Studio fosters creative learning and community engagement – both core to our mission as Virginia’s only design museum.

Each session offers participants the opportunity to explore a specific medium or technique in an intimate, workshop-style format. Through guided instruction, conversation, and hands-on practice, Maker’s Studio breaks down the barrier between observer and maker, reinforcing the belief that design is not only something to admire – but something to do.

Upcoming Sessions
“Seeing Differently: Drawing What You Actually See” with Artist Agnes Grochulska
DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED

In this hands-on, artist-led workshop, participants will explore powerful visual exercises that shift the brain from habitual, symbolic thinking to true observation. Through guided drawing activities, short demonstrations, and moments of reflection, you’ll learn to quiet analytical judgment and strengthen the perceptual skills that lead to more accurate, confident drawing.

Rather than focusing on style or perfection, this workshop trains the foundations of realistic seeing: edges, negative space, proportion, light and shadow, and how the whole image fits together. These skills benefit anyone who wants to draw more realistically — whether you’re picking up a pencil for the first time or refining an existing practice.

Tickets ($75) include drawing materials, wine & light refreshments.

“Color: A Deep Dive” with Artist Mark Eanes
Tuesday, May 12th, 2026 | 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Richmond artist and color theory expert, Mark Eanes leads this hands-on Maker’s Studio session exploring the fundamentals of color theory through acrylic paint. Participants will break down color into hue, value, and intensity, then put theory into practice by creating their own color scales.

Designed for all experience levels, the class focuses on how to mix both reliable foundational colors and more nuanced, unique tones—an essential skill for artists and designers alike. Guests will leave with a stronger understanding of color relationships and greater confidence in mixing paint.

Tickets ($75) include painting materials, wine & light refreshments.
