Community Needs and Revitalization in Richmond's East End - The Kitchens at Reynolds

Richmond’s East End consists of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, as well as some of its most under-resourced. A multi-partner revitalization initiative seeks to address the issues of poverty, social justice, and access to healthy food, education, and opportunity that have impacted the area for decades. In this webinar, panelists will discuss how these community needs led to the recent completion of one part of the initiative, The Kitchens at Reynolds.

Beth O’Neill, Principal, O’Neill McVoy Architects [pictured left]
Beth O’Neill formed O’Neill McVoy Architects in 2012 with Chris McVoy. Beth runs the practice, and the award-winning built work, ongoing construction projects, and theoretical proposals include residential, commercial and institutional buildings and spaces realized in collaboration with private and public clients. OM recently completed The Kitchens at Reynolds community hybrid building in Church Hill, Richmond. Currently in construction, the Bronx Children’s Museum will open in Spring 2021.
Beth has 25 years of experience realizing ambitious residential and commercial projects in the New York area including Children’s Museum of Art and Wieden+Kennedy (with Work AC), Theory and Kate Spade (with Rogers Marvel) and several houses (with Peter Wheelwright). She holds a B.A. in History from Smith College, a B.A. in Environmental Design from Parsons School of Design, a Master of Architecture from Columbia University, and is a professor of undergraduate architecture at the Pratt Institute.
Chris McVoy, Principal, O’Neill McVoy Architects [pictured center]
In addition to co-piloting O’Neil McVoy Architects with Beth, Chris McVoy is the Senior Partner of Steven Holl Architects, where he has led with Steven Holl several internationally recognized, award-winning cultural and university projects including VCU’s Institute for Contemporary Art at the Markel Center, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston Campus Expansion, The REACH Expansion of the Kennedy Center, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art Bloch Building, Kansas City, The University of Iowa School of Art and Art History, and the Glasgow School of Art New Building. Chris holds a B.A. in Architecture from the University of Virginia and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University.
Steven Markel, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Markel Corporation [pictured right]
Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Steven Markel has been with the Markel Corporation for 45 years. Although he is now mostly retired, he is still active with Markel in a non-executive role as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Steven is also heavily involved in non-profit and philanthropic activities; for the past several years, his work has been focused on development and revitalization efforts in Richmond’s Church Hill neighborhood.
Dr. Paula P. Pando, President of Reynolds Community College
Dr. Paula Pando is a strategic, forward thinking educator with over 25 years of experience in both public and private higher education. The daughter of immigrants, she has a profound commitment to educational opportunity and equity. In May 2018, Dr. Pando was appointed the fourth president of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Prior to this, she served as the Senior Vice President for Student and Educational Services at Hudson County Community College in New Jersey. Dr. Pando is a frequent keynote speaker or panelist on topics ranging from equity and inclusion to workforce development to managing organizational change. She currently serves on several boards including Chamber RVA, the Valentine Museum, and Go Virginia.
