(re)Framing Protest (NOW): Community Conversation

Visit The Branch on Thursday, July 10 at 6pm for a compelling community conversation featuring Richmond Free Press photojournalists Regina H. Boone and Sandra Sellars, along with exhibition writer Nichole Christian, as they discuss the photographs, protests, and creative resistance captured during the summer of 2020 and featured in the exhibition (re)Framing Protest (NOW). The conversation will explore the intersection of art, activism, and public space, and how Richmond’s community reshaped its cityscape in response to a national call for justice.

Following the discussion, guests are invited to a book signing of the original exhibition catalog, available for purchase at The Branch Museum of Design. Light refreshments provided.

Meet the Panelists:  

Regina H. Boone, photographer, (re)Framing Protest (NOW): Design + Hope, is an award-winning photojournalist with over two decades of experience capturing stories of resilience, from her hometown of Richmond, VA with the Richmond Free Press to nearly 14 years at the Detroit Free Press. Her powerful image of a toddler during the Flint water crisis was featured on the cover of Time and named one of CNN’s “100 Photos that Defined the Decade.” A graduate of Spelman College, Regina has taught in Japan, traveled extensively, and studied photojournalism at Ohio University. In 2018, during her Knight-Wallace Fellowship, she began a personal research project on her Japanese grandfather’s wrongful arrest during WWII—her final assignment from her late father, publisher Raymond H. Boone.

Sandra Sellars, photographer, (re)Framing Protest (NOW): Design + Hope, is a celebrated photojournalist whose work with the Richmond Free Press has earned numerous state and national awards, including Best in Show for her coverage of the 2020 protests with Regina Boone. In addition to her journalism, Sandra contributes to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as a Special Projects and Events Photographer and was recognized for her work on the Louis Draper Archival Portal. A skilled black-and-white printer, Sandra holds both a B.S. and M.S. in Mass Communications from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Nichole Christian, our moderator, writer, and editor of (re)Framing Protest (NOW): Design + Hope, is a writer and creative director known for her dynamic voice and multidimensional approach to storytelling. A former staffer at The Wall Street Journal, Time, The New York Times, and the Detroit Free Press, she brings a seasoned journalistic lens to her work. As the lead writer for (re)Framing Protest (Now) and its accompanying catalogue, Nichole shaped the exhibition’s narrative with depth and clarity. She is also the creative director and editor for The Kresge Foundation’s Eminent Artist monograph series and co-author of Canvas Detroit. Her writing has appeared in numerous books, arts journals, and museum publications, reflecting a career devoted to elevating voices and exploring the intersection of art, identity, and social justice. She is a proud native Detroiter.
