Steven Glass: A Retrospective
Turning Points in Clay/ A Life in Art

February 29th - March 31st, 2024

The Branch Museum of Architecture and Design is pleased to announce the exhibition,  Steven Glass, A Retrospective: Turning Points in Clay/A Life in Art, a retrospective exhibition celebrating the career of Steven Glass, who has been the Resident Potter at VMFA since 1982. The exhibition will open to the public at The Branch on March 1, 2024, and will run through March 31, 2024. It will then travel to other venues across the country.

The exhibit will feature a wide range of Glass’s work, including functional ceramics, sculptural vessels, and large-scale installations. “I am deeply honored to have my work featured in a retrospective at The Branch Museum,” said Steven Glass. “I have spent my entire career creating art that is both functional and beautiful, and I am excited to share my journey with a wider audience.”

“All these adventures, struggles, and successes are part of having a life in art, something that is not based on fame or monetary success, but about making a life that has some overriding value that transcends such things.”

-Howard Risatti, Professor Emeritus, Virginia Commonwealth University.

“Steven’s most recent works feature an expressive, painterly surface in which the artist’s fluency is apparent, but so also is his disregard for precision in favor of the magic of discovery.”

-Paula Owen, Professor Emerita, Southwest School of Art, San Antonio.

Steven Glass, A Retrospective: Turning Points in Clay/A Life in Art is organized by The Branch Museum of Architecture and Design in conjunction with the NCECA Conference, which will be held in Richmond, VA, from March 26-29, 2024.
