SUMMARY:Ruined
DESCRIPTION:Curated by John Ryland of Richmond-based Classified Moto\, Ruined showcases the raw creativity and industrial edge that have made the shop a cult favorite around the world. In John’s view\, being told he’s “ruined” a perfectly good bike is a badge of honor—it means he’s taken a run-of-the-mill machine and turned it into something unexpected\, personal\, and unforgettable. \nThe exhibition features some of Classified Moto’s most recognized builds\, including the motorcycle designed in 2014 for AMC’s The Walking Dead\, built for the character Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus). This one-of-a-kind bike became an instant icon\, appearing in AMC’s promotional campaigns and displayed at events like San Diego Comic-Con. \nVisitors to Ruined will have the rare opportunity to sit on Daryl’s bike and take photos—a hands-on moment few fans have ever experienced.

SUMMARY:Refined: The Design of Vespa
DESCRIPTION:Refined: The Design of Vespa \nFrom Italian ingenuity to contemporary cool\, Refined explores the enduring legacy of one of the most recognizable and stylish designs of the 20th and 21st centuries. More than just a scooter\, the Vespa is a cultural touchstone—an emblem of freedom\, elegance\, and fashion-forward innovation on two wheels. \nThis exhibit traces Vespa’s evolution from its 1946 debut\, when aircraft engineer Corradino D’Ascanio reimagined urban transportation with sleek lines\, enclosed mechanics\, and an intuitive\, step-through frame—radically different from the grease-and-grit motorcycles of the era. Designed for practicality\, it quickly became a symbol of effortless style. Its aerodynamic silhouette and candy-colored hues captured the glamour and optimism of a new era in Italy\, earning Vespa global admiration and a permanent place in the design canon. \nThrough vintage models\, advertisements\, and pop culture artifacts\, Refined showcases how the scooter’s form and function have continuously adapted while remaining unmistakably Vespa. From couture campaigns to Fellini films\, Vespa has always been more than a ride—it’s a fashion statement in motion.

SUMMARY:Ruined and Refined: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Branch Museum of Design presents Ruined and Refined—two exhibitions exploring innovation in motorcycle and scooter design—opening Thursday\, July 24\, 2025. \nRuined\, curated by John Ryland of Richmond-based Classified Moto\, fills the Long Gallery with custom motorcycles that highlight transformation and purpose. A centerpiece of the show is the motorcycle built in 2014 for AMC’s The Walking Dead\, used by Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus). Designed by Classified Moto\, the bike appeared in promotional campaigns and events like San Diego Comic-Con. Visitors will have the rare chance to sit on the bike and take photos—a hands-on experience few fans have had. \nIn the Main Gallery\, Refined: The Design of Vespa traces the evolution of one of the world’s most recognizable scooters. At the heart of the exhibition is the Vespa 946 “Snake”—a rare\, numbered model released in 2025 for the Year of the Snake. With its sculptural silhouette and precision detailing\, this limited-edition scooter represents the cutting edge of Vespa’s design evolution. Refined places the 946 Snake alongside a collection of vintage and modern scooters\, showing how form and function have shifted over time while remaining unmistakably Vespa. \nJoin us for a free opening reception on Thursday\, July 24\, from 6–8 PM.  Guests will enjoy access to both exhibitions and photo opportunities with Daryl’s bike. Open bar and light snacks will be provided.  \nPresented with generous support from GEICO Richmond\, Matt Smith | MSE Properties\, Ivor Massey\, and Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists (VCOM). Special thanks to Moto Richmond\, Lucky Signs\, Lucas Gaitan and Rhiannon Newman.

SUMMARY:Live at The Branch: John Emil
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets Here \nJoin us at The Branch on Wednesday\, September 3rd for a mini-concert featuring John Emil. \nJohn Emil\, an accomplished singer/songwriter\, guitarist\, and a master of slide guitar\, has delivered show-stopping performances across the United States and United Kingdom. His notable appearances include major festivals such as the Atlanta Blues and Bluegrass Fest\, Leek Blues & Americana Festival UK\, Abber Jazz & Blues Fest Wales UK\, and Garden & Gun Festival. His expanding repertoire of prestigious venues spans from the historic Coister Ballroom at Sea Island GA\, where he opened for The Steep Canyon Rangers\, to the elegant Boston Library Courtyard as part of the City of Boston Summer Concert Series. \nEqually adept with the acoustic Hawaiian lap steel guitar and Dobro\, fans hear haunting\, subtle hints of Delta bluesmen Son House and Blind Willie Johnson\, but John Emil ultimately creates a unique style all his own by integrating country blues\, folk and bluegrass sounds into his repertoire. \nHis international reach extends throughout the UK music scene\, with acclaimed performances at venerable venues including The Howlin Wolf Club in Glasgow\, Scotland\, Mrs Yarringtons Music Club in Battle\, and the Going Up The Country Blues and Roots Club in Worthenbury\, Wales. Domestically\, he’s graced stages from Smiths Olde Bar in Atlanta to intimate settings like the Howard County Historical Society Concert series in Maryland. \nRoutinely taking the lost art of slide guitar in a new direction\, John has composed a wealth of slide guitar tracks for media production libraries. His instrumental tracks have been published by LA Post Music Los Angeles\, Songs to Your Eyes Los Angeles and Strange Fruit South Africa. John became the first American musician to be published by London’s KPM/EMI\, one of the world’s largest production libraries. Among the many television and cable network shows John has supplied music for NBC’s Dateline\, Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations\, American Pickers\, and several international wildlife and nature documentaries.

SUMMARY:Confluence
DESCRIPTION:Confluence is a solo exhibition by Vietnamese-American artist Kenny Nguyen. \nConfluence is rooted in the idea of different elements coming together—materials and histories merging into something new. The word itself means “the place where lines flow together\,” and that meaning resonates deeply with Nguyen. He thinks about the rivers in his hometown in the Mekong Delta—how they meet\, shift\, and reshape the land around them. That geography has always stayed with him as a metaphor for transformation and the diasporic experience. \nIn his work\, Nguyen uses hand-cut silk as both material and metaphor. Silk carries weight—it’s tied to cultural tradition and fragility—but through processes of layering and rearranging\, he pushes it into sculptural forms that move across the wall. These pieces live between painting\, sculpture\, and textile. That in-between space is where Nguyen feels most at home—where boundaries blur and something hybrid emerges. \nNguyen’s background in fashion design continues to inform how he approaches structure and form. The way fabric behaves\, how it drapes and contours—these tactile qualities are central to how he builds each piece. Nguyen is interested in how fashion\, like art\, can carry memory and identity\, stitched together in ways both visible and invisible. \nConfluence brings together not only threads of material\, but also threads of memory\, displacement\, and reconstruction. It’s about the way things don’t just come together—they shift\, resist\, and eventually settle into new forms. \nKenny Nguyen\, Eruption Series No. 106\, 2025\, Hand-cut silk fabric\, acrylic paint\, canvas\, mounted on wall\, 84 x 103 in. / 213.36 x 261.62 cm \n  \n

SUMMARY:Designer Discussion with Kenny Nguyen
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered how silk can become sculpture?  \nIn Confluence\, artist Kenny Nguyen uses hand-cut silk as both material and metaphor for transformation—layering\, cutting\, and reshaping it into sculptural forms that blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and textile. \nOn October 2\, 6–8 PM\, Nguyen takes us inside his practice during a special designer discussion at The Branch. The evening will be moderated by Renee Lamb\, professor in the VCUarts Fashion Department\, who brings over 20 years of experience working with textiles. \nBuy Tickets Here
