SUMMARY:Critical Regionalism in Landscape: Connecting Gillette to Present Practice
DESCRIPTION:Re-scheduled Date Ticketing Page \nJoin us on Thursday\, May 29th at 6pm for an insightful lecture with Warren Byrd. Through his presentation\, Byrd will connect the timeless work of Charles Gillette to current practices in landscape architecture. \n\n\nBy placing Gillette in historical context\, Byrd will demonstrate the link between past and present landscape architects\, illustrating the lasting impact of Gillette’s legacy. He will also discuss how this legacy informs today’s design approaches—highlighting what we should continue to embrace and what areas require evolution. Additionally\, Byrd will showcase recent landscape architectural projects\, focusing on the contemporary directions in design\, particularly through the work of NBW. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to engage with the past while envisioning the future of landscape architecture!

SUMMARY:(re)Framing Protest (Now): Design + Hope
DESCRIPTION:(re)Framing Protest (NOW) Design + Hope expands on the powerful 2022 show with new programming and a beautifully produced printed catalog. Developed in partnership with Richmond Free Press photojournalists Regina H. Boone and Sandra Sellars\, the exhibition shows how creative expression and design fueled the work of activists\, artists\, and organizers who mobilized during the summer of 2020 to collectively support and amplify the Black Lives Matter movement. Graffiti\, graphic design\, and spontaneous public art became both tools of resistance and acts of reflection—capturing the pain of a city while offering hope and healing. \nThe (re)Framing Protest (NOW): Design + Hope catalog\, designed by April Coleman\, Vice President of Production at the Richmond Free Press\, features expanded text from the original exhibition by writer and creative strategist Nichole Christian\, deepening the exhibition’s impact\, continued relevance\, and narrative. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Story Circles and the Unveiling of "Umama" - POSTPONED; NEW DATE TBC
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets Here \n  \nTHIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO HIGH TEMPERATURES – PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR A NEW DATE SHORTLY. \nVisit The Branch for a deeply meaningful and creative experience as we combine the unveiling of Umama with the transformative activity of Story Circles. These Story Circles honor the multifaceted and profound journey of Black Motherhood—one of the core inspirations behind Umama. \nAt the heart of this gathering is the Divine Feminine\, the universal principle of creation that resides within us all\, regardless of gender. This principle\, often symbolized by the womb\, is the sacred source of life and renewal\, echoing the creative power of the Great Mother herself. Through storytelling and collage-making\, we will explore how this force shapes our lives\, connects us\, and reflects the infinite dimensions of motherhood. \nLed by ART 180\, the Story Circles provide an intimate and supportive environment where every voice is heard and every experience is honored. Whether you are a mother\, were raised by one\, or have stories shaped by caregiving and nurturing\, your story holds immense value here. \nParticipants will have the chance to create personal collages using a variety of paper materials and images to express their reflections. All supplies will be provided\, though you are welcome to bring photos\, clippings\, or other meaningful paper items to incorporate into your artwork. \nThis workshop is open to all ages and welcomes everyone—no prior art experience is needed. Simply bring your openness\, creativity\, and willingness to connect. Together\, we will celebrate the connections\, self-expression\, and the many ways the Divine Feminine and motherhood shape our lives.”

SUMMARY:The Shadow of a Petal // Floral Design Inside the County Jail
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening night of 𝘛𝘏𝘌 𝘚𝘏𝘈𝘋𝘖𝘞 𝘖𝘍 𝘈 𝘗𝘌𝘛𝘈𝘓: 𝘍𝘓𝘖𝘙𝘈𝘓 𝘋𝘌𝘚𝘐𝘎𝘕 𝘐𝘕𝘚𝘐𝘋𝘌 𝘛𝘏𝘌 𝘊𝘖𝘜𝘕𝘛𝘠 𝘑𝘈𝘐𝘓 on July 11th from 6-9pm. \nThe project is centered around a series of Floral Therapy workshops with Chesterfield County Jail’s nationally recognized recovery program\, H.A.R.P. (Helping Addicts Recover Progressively)\, led by horticultural therapist\, psychotherapist\, and clinical social worker Becca Amos and floral designer Meredith Wheeler of Secret Flowers. \nThe exhibition features photographs by Amy Robison and Sydnee Schorr including process photography\, portraits\, and completed floral arrangements. It presents first-hand participant accounts and explores how creative\, nature-based interventions can foster emotional expression and individual and collective healing—even in the most restrictive environment. And it invites a broader conversation about the systems that sever people from nature and the possibilities for therapeutic practice in carceral spaces. \n100% OF PROCEEDS FROM THIS EXHIBITION WILL BE DONATED TO THE H.A.R.P. RVA RECOVERY PROGRAM.  The exhibit is on view July 11th – July 19th.
