SUMMARY:Branch Medallion Award
DESCRIPTION:Please join The Branch Museum of Architecture and Design on Thursday\, November 9th 6:30-9pm for our 2023 Virginia by Design reception as we recognize Edwin Slipek for his extraordinary contributions to Richmond’s design community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe evening will consist of a special tribute to Slipek\, where we explore his contributions in depth with commentary from those who have been inspired and influenced by his many endeavors. Cocktails\, hors d’oeuvres\, and live music following. \nA Richmond native\, Edwin grew up surrounded by the influences of great design. This influence led to a lifetime of work built around celebrating architecture and design as an editor\, art and architecture critic\, communications director\, contributing writer\, adjunct professor\, co-founder of Architecture Richmond and more. \n  \nWe hope you’ll join us in celebrating Slipek by purchasing your tickets today or making a gift in his honor. \n\nPurchase tickets here.

SUMMARY:Truetone Honeys Mini Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Truetone Honeys are a female vocal trio specializing in the nuanced stylings of early swing music. The Boswell Sisters of New Orleans serve as their primary inspiration\, though they hold an appreciation for groups whose arranging took inspiration from their style (the Dinning Sisters\, the Andrews Sisters\, etc.) Since their formation\, their genre has determined that they have mostly performed with full swing bands\, brassy and blaring. While they continue to love performing in that mode\, they have been inspired more and more lately to highlight the complex metrical worlds and tonalities of the vocal writing they love so deeply–the vocal lines that drew them to the genre in the first place. \nMoving toward that purpose\, they have taken a step away from the full band for a more intimate tour in which they will accompany themselves on piano\, ukulele\, and banjolele; they expect that this shift will lessen the sense of “novelty” that can tragically distance listeners from the immediate soul of this repertoire\, which speaks for itself in any era. Their highest hope is that these shows will reignite an appreciation for the vocal jazz jewels of the 1920s-1940s and the genius of the female composers and arrangers who crafted many of their most brilliant settings. \nPurchase tickets here!

SUMMARY:Coffee + Conversation
DESCRIPTION:About the Event: \n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, October 7th\, at 10 AM for Coffee + Conversation with Jessie Gemmer. Jessie will be discussing building your spatial vocabulary. \nWe live every moment of our modern lives in a constructed world designed by people we never meet.  The spaces we live\, work\, play\, love\, grow and grieve in affect us – physically and mentally – but within a shroud of mystery that cloaks the world of architecture. In order to understand how the built environment affects our existence we must first identify what it’s made out of and then how it makes us feel.  Please join us for a conversation about the basic building blocks of the physical world\, as we work together to understand the magic powers of architecture and design. \nEnjoy delicious coffee or a mimosa (21+)\, light breakfast foods\, and design-centered discussion. \nAbout Jessie Gemmer: \nJessie Gemmer is a registered architect\, VCU professor\, and the founder of Acme Architecture. Jessie believes that design is the language we use to give physical form to the ephemeral. Her guiding principle\, in the words of Barbara Bestor\, is that “everyone should experience strange beauty every day.” \n\nGet tickets here.
